Could anyone point me in the direction of an accessible source that describes the formal role of provincial directors and its evolution beyond that of canonical visitation? I am particularly interested in the late 19c and first half of the 20c before the role was given juridical shape in 1954 and in the structural differentiation between his role and that of the visitatrix. For example, was he the chair of the provincial council in this period? I know he signed the council minutes.
Have any articles on the history of the role of provincial director been published?
Thank you. Susan
