Surrogate Fathers, Journal of Ecclesiastical History

An article written on the Lazarist successions to the Jesuits after their abolition in the eighteenth century in various locations has been published today by the Journal of Ecclesiastical History. This is the second output from my recent research project, begun with funding from the VSI and then the Irish Research Council. My article published by the Vincentian Heritage Journal last year dealt solely with the Evora succession; in contrast this article leans on records I found in Italy,…See More

Eugène Boré: a letter from Azerbaijan

This letter, which I found recently in the British Library, is from Eugène Boré, one-time Lazarist superior general, penned from Julfa in Azerbaijan on 6 August 1841.Boré, of course, needs little introduction. At least since 1894, when Léonce de la Rallaye wrote his first biography of the man (see Eugène Boré et les origines de la question d'Orient, Paris 1894), Boré's contributions to the fields of education, philology and ethnography have been well established. Yet the fruits of his travels,…See More

Succeeding the Jesuits: the Lazarists of the Palatinate

As part of my ongoing new book project Succeeding the Jesuits, I have been excavating sources relevant to the Lazarists' short, but memorable, tenure as the Jesuits' successors in the  Electoral Palatinate (Kurpfalz), a small but picturesque county in south-west Germany. The three pictured printed books are extremely rare…See More

Book Announcement: Fealty and Fidelity: the Lazarists of Bourbon France, 1660-1736.

Dear ColleaguesI am pleased to announce the publication of my book Fealty and Fidelity: the Lazarists of Bourbon France, 1660-1736, with Ashgate. The book provides a major critical investigation of the followers of Vincent de Paul, one of the French Catholic reform's most decisive contributors. It uncovers rich new information…See More

Surrogate Fathers: the Lazarists as Jesuit Successors

I am about to commence a new two year project at University College Dublin, which will examine the European fallout of the Jesuit suppressions commencing in 1759 in Portugal. This project, which is funded by the Irish research Council's Government of Ireland Fellowship, is an extension of the project begun under the auspices of the Vincentian Studies Institute in 2014.The VSI grant allowed me to collect valuable archival resources in Portugal and Italy. These materials will eventually be…See More

Hospice et charité: les Lazaristes au Collège des Irlandais, 1858-1945

An exhibition on the Lazarists' role at the Irish College in Paris during the war-torn period between 1858 and 1945 will be opened on 11 September 2014. The 'vernissage' will take place at the Centre Culturel Irlandais (Irish College), 5, rue des Irlandais, Paris. The exhibition, based on my research at the College during summer…See More
